World Cup Soccer 2006

It is Sunday Morning July 11, 2006. In a few hours,  it will be France vs. Italy in the  World Cup. Our French friends may take their food and style seriously but the World Cup is verrrry zeriousss. It is about the pride, determination and courage of a (veteran) team that won the Cup in 1998, lost in 2002 and want to take back the Cup in 2006.   Pierre at 6’2 was a rugby player for a Championship team. But, sweet demure Carole was a tough and serious soccer  player until she left France in 1996.  Win or lose, members of the team will be sent an open invitation for dinner at Christophe redeemable anytime.

Bastille Day, Friday July 14.

The American Revolution began on July 4, 1776.  Six years later on July 14, 1789 was the start of the French Revolution.   We had the Boston Tea Party and threw some tea in Boston harbor.  Our French cousins “stormed” and burned the Bastille a local Paris prison and gave freedom to 7 political prisoners. King Louis XVl was an absolute ruler like Americans, the French wanted representation and freedom. A long story later, France became a Republic and 4 years later ding-dong the King was gone (forever)

Cool Down

July temperatures in Sausalito, San Rafael and Novato range between 51-53 degrees in the evenings. Daytime temperatures are another story. When Sausalito is a warm and comfortable 75 degrees, San Rafael and Novato can be toasty and sunny at 85-90+ degrees.

To cool down during the summer months, the French enjoy sipping a Pastis or Kir Royale. Pastis is served on the rocks and tastes like licorice or anise.  Pierre suggests a Kir Royale which combines, kir, crème de cassis and Champagne.

Bastille Day Menu

The French celebrate every holiday with food.  Bastille Day is no exception.  To celebrate Bastille Day we are preparing special dishes for our prix fixe and a la carte menus.

Blanquette de Veau- A veal stew with mushrooms, carrots, onions and celery in a white cream sauce.

Bouillabaisse- Traditional seafood stew  with fish and shellfish from Provence with garlic, onion, tomato, olive oil, saffron and herbs served on French bread .

Salmon de Tartar- Diced salmon marinated in herbs, chives, ginger and sesame with cucumber. (See Recipe on website What’s New)
